8 charged in $1.6 million training school scam - By Angela Rozas and Gary Washburn, Chicago Tribune
United Front obtained more than $1 million in loans to buy and rehab a second site in the 8900 block of South Greenwood Avenue, but prosecutors said it was 'barely habitable,' with leaking ceilings, no electricity for extended periods and rusting vats of toxic chemicals.
'The only power tools for teaching were a few circular saws,' Ghaster said. A union carpentry instructor hired to teach left after eight months because he wasn't being paid, prosecutors said. Students complained that instructors failed to show up or didn't instruct them in basic carpentry skills, leaving them unable to take the union exam because they hadn't been trained, prosecutors said.
