Softwood-Interim A U.S. counter-proposal for an interim solution to the softwood lumber dispute is as laughable as the previous offer, said a spokesman for the Montreal-based Free Trade Lumber Council.
"If this is designed to get Canada back to the negotiating table, I think it's very poorly designed because its not very attractive to get us back there," said spokesman Carl Grenier on Thursday, two days after the new proposal was sent to Canadian officials. "It would be a very expensive deal," said Grenier. The proposal included a call for a 13 per cent tax up to a 29.7 per cent market share, after which point there would be a tax jump to $175 US for every thousand board feet.
Canada had been asking for a zero-per-cent tax up to 17 billion board feet.------------------------------------------- posted 5:09 AM :: reference link ::
