Government closes offices and lays off staff in Employment Standards and insists new system is eliminating friction in workplace
VICTORIA -- The number of workers complaining to the government about their employers has fallen sharply since the province closed offices and laid off staff in the Employment Standards Branch.
Since new rules were introduced last fall, far fewer employers have been cited for mistreating their workers.
The government says the two-thirds drop in determinations against employers is a sign the new system is eliminating needless friction in the workplace.
'If you take away the laws of speeding on the road, the number of speeding tickets will go down,' said B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair."
