Edmonton Folk festival pushes boundaries: As at other folk festivals, the meaning of 'folk music' has become as wide as the Western prairie. It would be hard to be get more urban than the Funk Brothers, the hidden architects of the Motown sound, or than Elvis Costello, who played a show for the festival's governing society earlier this year.
'It's a four-letter word that starts with 'f' and ends with 'k,' ' Wickham said of the event's defining adjective. 'But if the programming is right, people don't care what it's called.'
