Bosch workers ready for the worst, hoping for the best By MICHAEL ELIASOHN
'The only thing that's going to be left is assembly,' said another concerned worker, Darren Umphrey, 41, of Decatur, a 14-year employee. 'If they find assembly in China is cheaper, I think they'll go that route.'
'We need to keep jobs in America,' said Pam Zandarski of Baroda, who has worked at the Bosch plant 12 years. She said moving jobs to foreign countries is 'ridiculous.'
Riden, who has worked at the Bosch plant 29 years and has been Local 383 president almost five years, said if the 400 union jobs are eliminated, senior workers in the foundry and machining will be able to bump those with less seniority in the remaining operations, provided they have comparable skills.
The union has slightly more than 1,000 members.
