Island carpenters form new company CBC - Prince Edward Island
CHARLOTTETOWN — Unionized carpenters on Prince Edward Island have formed their own company to bid on home construction projects, saying they can no longer afford to work for some private contractors.
The P.E.I. Carpenters Union says it will offer better wages, health and pension benefits to the 265 carpenters eligible to work for the new company. Members of the union say they've taken the step because private, non-union contractors haven't given carpenters a raise in 15 years.
Martin Kenny, with the P.E.I. Carpenters Union, says carpenters would like to make the same wages for home construction projects as they do on unionized commerical projects.
"We spent last few years trying to meet with residential contractors to work with us, paying living wage, pension health plan – we did not have success," said Kenny. "That's why we chose to form our own company."
