IWA-Canada Merger: Is It A Done Deal with Steel? ufcw.net Members for Democracy
Union mergers should be carefully scrutinized by union members who should involve themselves as much as possible in the selection of merger partner and in the terms and conditions of the merger agreement.
Mergers are often touted by the leaders as good things that will make the union stronger and better equipped to take on the corporations, but the evidence that there's anything much in them for the members is a bit thin. Since the 1980's, North American unions have been seeking salvation through mergers. A wave of mergers in the 1980's and 1990's brought us the humungous unions of the present day. The largest and most merger happy is the UFCW which attributes its phenomenal growth over the past two decades mainly to mergers with other, smaller unions.------------------------------------------- posted 6:59 PM :: reference link ::
