Olympic rush blamed for worker deaths By FOO YUNCHEE in Athens
Some construction worker representatives said the death of 13 people at Olympic building sites in the past two years underscored Greece's poor safety record and construction companies' indifference to safety standards.
The president of the workers' union at the Olympic Village, Giorgos Philiousis, accused construction firms of cutting corners in their rush to complete projects, pressuring workers to work longer hours and skimping on safety spending. He also said state supervision had been lacking.
The labour ministry said that of 154 accidents reported between 2001 and 2003 at 31 Olympic sites, 13 were fatal. About 11,000 people worked on the Games sites.
