New B.C. union deal expected to kick-start lumber mergers By PETER KENNEDY, The Globe and Mail
Such speculation comes after a provincial mediator imposed a new collective agreement last week on 10,000 members of the Industrial Wood and Allied Workers of Canada union, who went on strike last December.
Under the contract, workers who are currently receiving between $22.10 and $39 per hour stand to get a 6-per-cent increase over the remaining three years of the contract, which is retroactive to June 15, 2003.
The contract is seen as a big win for 61 employers on the coast because it gives them many of the things they were asking for in earlier contract talks with the IWA.
Among them is the right to run their sawmills continuously, with reduced travel and overtime pay for employees.
