Foreign ferry decision blasted by shipbuilders By Norman Gidney, Victoria Times Colonist
'It's a catch-22, it kind of gets under my skin. If you don't ever give them big ship orders why would you keep the facilities open?'
'These guys can do what they're asked to do,' Hill said. 'B.C. yards understand big conventional steel boats.'
Magazine owner Rod Tomkins said B.C. shipyards cannot compete with the very low-wage yards in China, which is building a lot of shipping these days, but the quality isn't as good. 'Apples to apples, B.C. is competitive. I don't know where B.C. Ferries is coming from,' said Tomkins.
Labour unions in B.C. are attacking the ferry corporation's decision to go offshore for new ferries.
