Merger between Woodworkers and Steelworkers another step closer CNW Telbec
A merger between the Industrial Wood and Allied Workers of Canada (IWA) and the United Steelworkers of America moved another step closer this week with the unanimous support of the Steelworkers International Executive Board.
The Board, representing the Steelworkers' 12 districts throughout North America, was joined by the full merger committees of both unions. Last month, the IWA's National Executive Board approved the terms of the tentative merger agreement.
Now, following meetings with IWA locals across Canada, the proposed merger will be the subject of a referendum ballot of the IWA membership.
'This is an important step toward endorsing a historic bonding of two unions whose past and present have played an important role in the labour movement in Canada,' said Steelworkers' International President Leo Gerard.
IWA President Norm Rivard said the critical next step is taking the merger proposal to the IWA membership.
