A heartfelt foundation By Michael Daly, New York Daily News
Whatever precise form the tower and the accompanying memorial take, they will be just so much steel and concrete and glass if their spiritual cornerstone does not comprise what is found inside the small shack at the opposite side of The Pit.
As measured by the heart, this tiny, one-story structure set at The Pit's downtown edge soars higher than any building in the Manhattan skyline, higher even than the twin towers that once stood there, which after all were just buildings.
This structure began as twin huts built by members of Local 608 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. One was used by the firefighters. The second, larger hut was divided and used by the Port Authority Police and the NYPD.
'Two-by-fours and plywood,' a Port Authority Police commander said Friday. 'Basically, a big shed.'
