Let freedom soar By Joseph Sabino Mistick, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Much was made of the return of kite flying in Afghanistan after our brave soldiers vanquished the Taliban. And since Americans are abundantly expressive regarding our own freedoms, the Memorial Kite Project was organized to fly kites at the three attack sites on the second anniversary of 9/11.
On that day, at the Flight 93 crash site in Somerset County, freedom soared -- for one brief shining moment. The kites had barely taken flight when the law put a stop to such foolishness. Crestfallen kite-fliers were informed that higher-ups had determined that there would be no kite flying near the crash memorial. Somehow, we had secured a simple freedom for Afghanistan, but lost it for ourselves.
