There's Security in Union Solidarity Canada NewsWire
The Port Authority awarded the new security services contract to Securiguard Inc who refused to recognize the IAMAW and didn't offer employment to the unionized workforce but expected the security officers to train their replacements.
This didn't sit well with the members of the International Longshoreman Workers Union who provide passenger-loading services at the piers. "The ILWU gave me their assurances that they wouldn't cross our lines because they feel this is an unfair practice by Securiguard," said IAMAW Assistant Deputy Mike Clegg.
Faced with possible disruptions for cruise ship season that generates over $500 million for the economy of British Columbia, the Port Authority reached an agreement in principle with Aeroguard. Cruise terminal guard services will operate under a new management structure while Aeroguard security guards will continue to operate under their present agreement with Aeroguard.
"I can't say enough about the strength of union solidarity and the courage of the ILWU members who supported us," said Clegg.
