Western premiers push Martin to act on tough trade talk with U.S. By PATRICK BRETHOUR, AND JILL MAHONEY, Globe and Mail
'Sending a carrier pigeon down Pennsylvania Avenue with a diplomatic note doesn't work in the United States. You have got to be more aggressive,' Mr. Doer said, with other premiers nodding in agreement.
B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell said he supports Mr. Martin's call for a tightening of the dispute-resolution mechanisms of the North American free-trade agreement that would allow for quicker and final decisions on trade disputes such as the three-year-old cross-border clash over softwood lumber.
Mr. Campbell also said he is perturbed by the apparent double standard. 'I think the frustration that we all feel is Americans talk about free and open markets and then they work very hard to keep it closed.'
