Union, shipping officials conduct job lottery at LA-area ports By Alex Veiga, AP
Longshore union officials began accepting lottery cards last week; those mailed in by jobseekers filled nearly a third of a metal container the size of a small car.
The drawing, which began under the supervision of five arbitrators shortly after 9 a.m., wrapped up about seven hours later, said Pacific Maritime Association spokesman Steve Sugerman. The names of some of those picked were posted on the Internet, with the rest to be posted by early next week.
Arbitrators intended to select roughly 8,880 postcards and mix them with an equal amount of cards sent in by workers already affiliated with the port industry. The final 3,000 were to be randomly hand-picked from a combined pool of 17,600 cards, Sugerman said.
