In order to be a buildings inspector in Chicago, you have to be a member of the carpenters union. But you also have to meet certain job requirements posted by the city. For instance, you have to complete an ''approved building trade apprentice program AND have journeyman status AND have two years of work experience.'' That's according to Breelyn Pete, spokeswoman for the Buildings Department.
