Union's banners can stay at sites By Pamela Manson, The Salt Lake Tribune
Members of a carpenters union can continue to display banners scolding Utah businesses for hiring New Star General Contractors and Okland Construction, a federal judge says.
The West Jordan and Provo locals of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America are angry with the two general contractors for using employees who are not members of their union.
Union members have appeared at businesses that hire the contractors to erect 4-feet-by-20-feet banners that read, "Labor Dispute - SHAME ON [Name of Business] - Labor Dispute."
U.S. District Judge Paul Cassell agreed with two other courts that have decided similar cases in favor of the union and against the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which had requested an order prohibiting the banners in Utah.
"The NLRB is now 0-3," the judge wrote in a decision made public on Tuesday.
