Veterans get chance to learn trades By Bill Theobald, Indianapolis Star
Indiana is first state whose unions join together to help ex-military in Helmets to Hardhats program.
Under a resolution signed by Caulfield, Gov. Joe Kernan, Ivy Tech State College President Gerald Lamkin and representatives of the Indiana State Building and Construction Trades Council, veterans will bypass the normal interview process and be given direct entry into the degree-track apprentice programs that train plumbers, electricians, carpenters and other trade workers.
The program applies to all military veterans and to members of the guard and reserves. It could mean jobs in the trades for about 500 Indiana military veterans a year, said Pete Rimsans, associate director of the trades council. The council represents more than 65,000 Indiana workers in 15 construction unions.
