Real estate preservationists take aim at artificial siding By Carol Lloyd, Inman News
Recently, however, far more serious charges have been leveled against vinyl siding. It's made of nonbiodegradable polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, the widely used material known among environmentalists as 'the most toxic product on Earth,' with by-products ranging from dioxin to hydrochloric acid. A campaign called 'My House Is Your House' is attempting to transform the PVC industry in the way asbestos and lead were phased out through vigorous protests and reform. In a landmark case in Italy, 36 vinyl executives were charged with manslaughter for the deaths of 100 workers and chronic symptoms among 600 more, and lawsuits are pending in America that hold the vinyl industry culpable for worker illnesses.
