Our region's surest-to-kill-a-conversation question comes every time a Canadian reporter calls a friend south of the border and asks: 'What are people down there saying about the softwood lumber dispute?' The issue of whether and how much Canada subsidizes its timber industry -- and duties that the United States slaps on imports as retaliation -- is high-profile stuff north of the 49th parallel.
