Man dies in trench collapse By Eugene Driscoll, Danbury News Times, CT
City officials believe he died instantly.
They also suggested that his death was unnecessary.
Fernandes was part of a crew installing underground drainage pipes at Westville Commons, a condominium complex under construction on Scuppo Road. Federal law calls for dirt walls to be braced when workers are in trenches, but no supports were in place in this case, city officials said.
“That’s a no-no,” said Danbury assistant fire chief Phil Curran. He said the lack of supports and the rain-softened soil both contributed to the cave-in on the city’s west side.------------------------------------------- posted 7:16 AM :: reference link ::
