WorkCover launches building safety crackdown - ABC Regional Online, Australia
ACT WorkCover will target construction sites in Canberra this month to ensure building contractors are following safety regulations.
WorkCover commissioner Erich Janssen says inspectors will visit sites to check workers have licences to operate machinery such as forklifts and cranes.
He says it will also examine scaffolding.
'The way the scaffolding's been constructed, whether it's been constructed to handle the loads that are going to be put onto it, access to the scaffold by workers who need to use it and issues around machinery and plant and vehicles near scaffold and the potential for collisions and other hazards,' he said.
He says inspectors will ask workers to produce a certificate of competency.
'It's basically like a licence to drive a car, in this case to operate a crane or to drive a forklift or to do certain scheduled work like erecting scaffolding,' he said.
'It simply indicates the person has gone through an appropriate course of training and has been assessed as being competent to undertake the work.'------------------------------------------- posted 8:01 AM :: reference link ::
