Construction trades trying to attract young people - By MARTHA IRVINE, AP, The Journal News.com, NY
In the Hudson Valley, building trades rank among the 25 fastest growing occupations, the New York state Labor Department says. Employment for electricians, plumbers, and cement masons all are expected to grow by more than 40 percent in the 10-year period ending in 2012.

It's less clear that a labor shortage in the building trades is looming in the northern suburbs. An estimated 300 of the 1,000 electricians in Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Westchester and Fairfield counties are expected to retire in the next 10 years, said Andy White, Local 3's training director.
