According to Carpenter's Local business representatives Jim Burba and Steve Dolan, Local #624 has 550 members in 32 cities and towns including Plymouth, Carver, Halifax and Kingston. There are 12,000 union carpenters across the state among 27,000 throughout New England.
Two hundred Plymouth residents are Carpenter's Union members, including some in affiliated trades such as floor covering, millwrights, pipe fitters, steamfitters and pile drivers.
Burba and Dolan think some contractors conspire not to hire union employees for jobs so they can break the law.
'A lot of times these companies are holding all the cards with the immigrants because they provide housing and a ride to the job,' Dolan said.
