Workers at BWL protest change - By Nicole Geary, Lansing State Journal
A Lansing Board of Water and Light policy will endanger electrical crews working on high wires, and people nearby, union officials said Monday.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 352 is fighting the practice of dispatching two, instead of three, workers to the jobs. It says it violates its BWL contract. According to the BWL safety manual, two linemen must go up in the bucket when repairing overhead lines while one person acts as a safety observer.
The union represents 410 BWL employees, including nine affected by the policy. Joe Davis, business manager for IBEW Local 352, said they were told they would lose their jobs if they refused to comply.
