Apprentices find tools for success - By Craig Wolf, Poughkeepsie Journal, NY
ROCK TAVERN — It may not look like a school, but the big, blockish building with a sign that says Hudson Valley Carpenters Local 19 on it contains one of the mid-Hudson's lesser-known academies.
Although it's a relatively new building, the way students are taught here is actually ancient. The carpenters union uses the apprentice system, which combines working with learning.
Walter Krupa, coordinator of training for the local, which represents hundreds of members working in mid-Hudson counties, wouldn't have it any other way.
"The apprenticeship is one of the best-kept secrets," Krupa said. "For us, you have to do both. You have to do the training and you have to do the work," Krupa said.------------------------------------------- posted 7:28 AM :: reference link ::
