Construction Jobs for Minorities - Philadelphia Inquirer Editorial
The lack of enough good-paying jobs is a factor in many of Philadelphia's social ills, making it imperative to do more to obtain construction work for city residents.
A good step in that direction was the recent agreement between the Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council and the school district to reserve apprenticeships for city high school graduates. But reserving only 250 slots over a four-year period won't dissolve the root of this problem.
That can only happen if the building trades become much more ambitious about recruiting minority members, including both apprentices and journeymen who traditionally have been denied union cards.------------------------------------------- posted 6:24 AM :: reference link ::
