Foreign workers file rights complaint - By MATTHEW KWONG, globeandmail.com
VANCOUVER -- The union representing 42 Latin Americans working on the Canada Line rapid-transit tunnel filed a complaint with the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal yesterday, alleging they are being drastically underpaid because they are 'dark-skinned, Spanish-speaking foreign nationals.'
The Construction and Specialized Workers' Union lodged the grievance against Italian-based SELI Canada Inc. on the grounds of discrimination. Also named as respondents are joint-venture partners in the $2-billion project, SNC-Lavalin Constructors and SNCP-SELI.
