Building a career, dreams in the trades - By Amanda Marrazzo, Chicago Tribune
Kina McAfee of Hinsdale, a commercial carpenter for 22 years and a member of Carpenters Union Local 1, is chairwoman of Chicago Women in Trades and a volunteer instructor. She said women make up 3 percent of the construction industry workforce.
McAfee, who became a carpenter after doing volunteer residential rehab work with a community group on the South Side, said having 'thick skin' won't hurt.
'There is always one guy [who may not like working with a woman], but then there is always another guy willing to help,' McAfee said. 'You don't need a background in this; you just have to want to work hard and have a long-term view."------------------------------------------- posted 5:21 AM :: reference link ::
