Carnegie gets a new taste of its old railroad tower - By Carole Gilbert Brown, Pittsburgh Post Gazette
"It's a shame they took it down, [but] the new one is a beautiful piece of work," said Mr. Scisciani, who noted that building the 3,000-3,500-pound tower was an educational experience for both the apprentice carpenter students and their teachers.
Rick Okraszewski, an instructor in the carpenters' apprentice program, said he and educational coordinator Ray Vogel first had to translate a sketch with dimensions into design plans that were executed over a three-week period by approximately 30 second- and third-year apprentices.
Besides doing contracted work, the apprentice union takes on charity projects to give back to the community, he said.
