N.S. unable to protect retail workers from Sunday openings, union leaders say - Canadian Press: JAMES KELLER
Nova Scotia will be unable to protect retail workers from being forced to work on Sundays as its shopping ban for that day evaporates, labour advocates warned Thursday.
The Conservative government plans to update regulations by the weekend to allow wide-open Sunday shopping after a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge struck down some of its regulations.
The prospect of an extra day of shopping has worried worker rights advocates who argue employees who haven't worked Sundays in the past shouldn't be forced to now.
The province insists current legislation gives retail workers the right to refuse, but the head of the province's largest union says the law will do little to protect retail employees.
'The stuff that can happen in a workplace, it's so subtle how management and employers can get back at people who don't co-operate,' said Joan Jessome, president of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union.------------------------------------------- posted 8:45 AM :: reference link ::
