Electrical workers of Local 494 look back on how work has changed
Neimon: "Safety, I'd have to say, was almost non-existent at first. Really, if anybody wanted to push safety, they were jeopardizing their job. And it was later, I think it was maybe when OSHA came in (1971), that we finally could get together with the contractors and we had safety meetings on the job, like once a week, and had to keep records. We got hard hats and things like not working on energized items. And it gradually came around. But in the beginning, when I first started as an apprentice, safety - you were very careful to complain about something unless it was really dangerous or really, really serious. You kind of just sucked it up and kept on going."
