Global 'super union' plans face plenty of problems - By Julia May, The Age, Australia
The idea would make Margaret Thatcher's bouffant bristle: trade unions organising themselves as multinationals and declaring an innovative new age of activism. Bah, she would sniff. But perhaps a shift is occurring. On New Year's Eve, Britain's largest private-sector union, Amicus, announced plans to merge with the Transport and General Workers Union, creating an organisation with 2 million members in 30 sectors.
Then, Amicus trumpeted, it would form a tri-nation 'super union' with unions in Germany and the US. Amicus general secretary Derek Simpson said the move would 'create a powerful single union that can transcend borders to challenge the global forces of capital. I envisage a functioning, if loosely federal, multinational organisation within the next decade.'
