After a period of decline, Utah unions are on the move again - By Steven Oberbeck, Salt Lake Tribune
Although some in Utah might argue that unions have their place when it comes to protecting workers against exploitation, others question their relevance in a time when many businesses are offering wage-and-benefit packages similar to what labor organizations fought for in the past.
"When unions were strong they were the ones fighting to ensure safe working conditions and restrictions on hours of work," said Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper. "But a lot of those issues now are automatically taken care of by federal and state regulations.
