On the job: Organizing - By DOUGLASS CROUSE, NorthJersey.com
Prior to the New Jersey Regional Council of Carpenters' formation in 2001, four separate councils looked after members' concerns and organized work actions. Now all state representatives routinely sit down together.
"The biggest thing the council's formation has done is increase our strength and communication," said Dennis Sullivan, president and business agent for Local 15 in Hackensack. "Before, each individual county was an area unto itself. There wasn't really much exchange of ideas."
The regional council represents 26 local affiliates and nearly 17,000 carpenters, said John Ballantyne, the council's director of organizing. Having just one council also has streamlined how collective bargaining rates are set, a plus for contractors, he said.
