Texas tops U.S. in worker deaths - By Aissatou Sidime, San Antonio Express
In 2006, 486 Texas workers died on the job, mostly in accidents involving drivers and construction laborers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In comparison, New York had 233 deaths while California had 448 deaths.
In Texas, Hispanic workers accounted for 35 percent of fatalities. They represented 50 percent of the deaths in the San Antonio-Austin region, according to the Texas Department of Insurance Workers Compensation Division. Nationally, Hispanic workers made up 16 percent of the deaths.
In some cases, employers suggest, the deaths are the ugly byproducts of the area's booming construction industry and more lenient training requirements in the Lone Star State.------------------------------------------- posted 5:51 AM :: reference link ::
