'There will always be risk-takers'; Jury examining the death of Chad Lamond calls for changes to mining industry culture - Posted By Bob Vaillancourt The Sudbury Star, Ontario, Canada
Chad Lamond "made a conscious decision" not to tie off his safety harness the day he fell 700 feet to his death, his father told an inquest into his death Tuesday.
Lamond died at CVRD Inco's Creighton Mine more than five years ago in a mining tragedy.
Despite an unprecedented emphasis on safety in the workplace and millions being spent on worker training, "we still have workers that will make a conscious decision to work in an unsafe manner. Chad made such a decision," said his father, Robert.
"There will always be risk-takers in industry and industry will continue, unknown to them, to provide jobs to these workers," he said.
"We must initiate and develop systems for those workers who sometimes let pride and current cultures cloud their judgment."
