Forest safety hampered by 'defeatist attitude'- Vaughn Palmer, Vancouver Sun, Canada
The auditor-general cites one survey of death in the industry that determined 'the average casualty had more than 15 years experience as a faller.' Another survey found 'most fallers who have died in the last few years were safety-certified and experienced.'
So, one voice in the head saying you're good enough to beat the odds, the other saying there's nothing you can do if your number comes up.
A lethal combination. Quite literally, according to the auditor-general, who summarized the toll from accidents over the 10-year period ending 2006 as follows:
More than 200 deaths, almost 1,000 disabling injuries and a $700 million payout from worker's compensation.
