California - Court upholds validity of limit on protest signs The ordinance says wooden placard holders cannot be thicker than one-quarter of an inch and can be no more than 2 inches wide. It was adopted to protect the safety of demonstrators and police if rallies become unruly. The law, carrying a maximum six-month jail term, bars larger-sized wood at demonstrations even if the wood is not being used to hold protest signs.
