In asbestos debate, it's money that talks WASHINGTON -- Thousands of workers unknowingly exposed to cancer-causing asbestos were sick and dying. The courts were clogged with lawsuits. Asbestos manufacturers were going bankrupt. And Congress was debating whether to create a fund to compensate victims.
The year was 1982. Twenty-one years later, Congress is still debating the issue.
