Union rips Lowe's hiring By MATTHEW RALPH, nj.com
Fred Jones, of Buena, a member of Local 121, a carpenter's union based in Vineland, said Lowe's is doing the opposite of what its competitor, Home Depot, did four years ago when it built a new store just up the street in Vineland. Home Depot, he said, hired local union workers and as a result now gets their business.
'Lowe's doesn't have a problem taking money out of our pockets before they open,' Jones said. 'But they want to take money from us when they do open because we are the ones that shop there. We're the heart of soul of their business and they're denying us an opportunity, so we'll have to take our heart and soul across the street.'
Rusty Knapp, of Vineland, also a member of Local 121, estimated that he spends up to $15,000 a year buying materials for side jobs.
'Lowe's profit will be driven by people in the county,' Knapp said. 'For a company as well-to-do like this to not go with local workers is not very honorable.'
