U.S. appears willing to negotiate separate softwood deal with B.C. By Gordon Hamilton, Vancouver Sun
'He sounded like Monty Hall to me, the host of Let's Make a Deal,' said David Gray, of coastal lumber company Mill & Timber. He said Aldonas appears to be driving a wedge between B.C. and the rest of Canada.
'If Canada can't get together, let's see if we can get B.C. And if we can't get B.C., let's get the coast. As a guy on the coast, yeah, I'll talk. But as a Canadian, well, I don't know.'
He said the Aldonas-B.C. initiative has split the province from the rest of Canada.
British Columbia accounts for 50 per cent of Canada's $9-billion-a-year lumber trade with the U.S. and has been hardest hit by the duties.
