Cliffs ups pressure in talks Duluth News Tribune, MN
Emotions reached a new high last week when Cleveland-Cliffs announced it has a contingency plan to bring in temporary workers to replace Steelworkers in the event of an unresolved dispute.
Steelworkers say the announcement has fueled resentment among workers and strengthened their resolve.
'I know they have contingency plans, but why they went public with it I don't know, other than to pressure the union,' said Joe Strlekar, president of USWA Local 6860 at United Taconite. 'We belong at the bargaining table across from each other, not making threats.'
A labor rally today at the Ironman statue in Chisholm is expected to draw hundreds of USWA supporters. Members of Northeastern Minnesota building and trades, teacher and health care unions have been invited to attend.
