IWA, Steelworkers vote to merge, creating largest private-sector union Canadian Press
The Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers have voted to merge with the United Steelworkers of America, creating Canada's largest private-sector labour union.
Tentative vote results released Friday show that 60 per cent of IWA members who voted endorsed the merger, which will create a combined union of about 250,000 workers.
The IWA estimates about 60 per cent cast ballots.
IWA president Norman Rivard said the merger will strengthen the unions and allow them to achieve more for workers across the country.
Steelworkers Canadian director Ken Neumann said the merger creates a new force in the Canadian labour movement, as well as in federal and provincial politics.
