Apprentice workers sharpen skills By MATT KATZ, Cherry Hill Courier Post, NJ
Apprentice carpenters who would normally be at the Thomas C. Ober Carpenters Training Center in Hammonton have instead been working in Lumberton for the past three weeks - spackling, treating walls, installing Sheetrock and laying down floors. Friday was their last day in town.
After the disaster, volunteers from across the region flocked to Burlington County to help. But since most of the unskilled part of the cleanup is finished - like hauling away furniture and carpeting, tearing out walls and floors - skilled laborers are now at a premium.
Other union workers have come to Lumberton to help on their own during the weekends. But this was an organized effort on the part of the carpenters - a way to help both the apprentices, and the Lumberton residents.
