VDOT accused of ignoring safety BY KIMBALL PAYNE, Hampton Roads Daily Press, VA
A Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel electrician died in March because his supervisors routinely failed to enforce safety policies, state safety inspectors said Tuesday.
The inspectors, from the Department of Labor and Industry's occupational safety office, accused the Virginia Department of Transportation of committing 24 safety violations at the tunnel - all but three of them either 'serious' or 'willful.'
Basic safety procedures at the bridge-tunnel were habitually overlooked, the inspectors said, and their 25 pages of citations describe workers performing maintenance near exposed gears and protruding high-voltage wires and along walkways with missing railings.------------------------------------------- posted 6:38 AM :: reference link ::
