Which Way for the AFL-CIO: The Teamster View Unite to Win Blog
American workers and workers the world over need a strong U.S. labor movement. Without it, the inexorable global race to the bottom will lead to further inequality, further erosion in basic wage, labor, and social standards, and further limits on political democracy.
That is why the Teamsters Union welcomes the debate over the direction of the AFL-CIO.
With nearly 90% of U.S. workers without representation — the lowest percentage since the birth of the modern labor movement — we do not have the luxury of inaction. As the recent election shows, even our maximum efforts often fall short for the simple reason that we are too small.
Inaction, or only superficial change, guarantees the further marginalization and, ultimately, the eradication of our movement. Inaction is de facto acceptance of the dominance of the right wing, pro-corporate, anti-labor agenda. Inaction would mean that we have, in truth, abdicated our claim to represent the best interests of American workers.
