Blame shared in mining tragedy CP, Edmonton Sun
The nine men died on Sept. 18, 1992, when their mine car hit a bomb deliberately set deep underground at the Giant Mine in Yellowknife. They had crossed the union picket line to go to work.

It was the climax to a long, bitter labour dispute at the Giant Mine between the union that represented the miners and now-defunct Royal Oak Mines (now Royal Oak Ventures). The savage 18-month strike-lockout had daily confrontations and two other explosions as well as skirmishes with the RCMP.
