Union defamed builder, jury finds - By Barbara Rose, Chicago Tribune
A Lake County jury awarded $2.35 million in damages late Wednesday to a home builder who claimed a carpenters union campaign defamed him.
The jury found the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters guilty of one count of defamation for distributing handbills alleging that John Maki and his company, J. Maki Construction Co., built substandard homes.
The fliers, distributed in Lake and McHenry Counties, where Maki does business, rhymed Maki's name with 'crappy.'
'Only the union apparently thought it was funny--the jury didn't find it funny,' said Maki's attorney, Frederick Schwartz of Littler Mendelson in Chicago.
